Photo Safari by John Locus

What is a Photo Safari ?
John Locus, an award-winning professional photographer, organizes Photo Safaris to exciting locations such as auto salvage yards, private railroads, historic towns, and stunning waterfalls in Shawnee National Forest. During a photo safari you will capture photos that you may not have the opportunity to do otherwise. Some locations are private. Most locations are within 2 hours of our studio in Collinsville IL. We ensure your safety, always getting permission for the local towns and private owners.
John is also available to share his 50 years of expertise with businesses and organizations looking to enhance their photography techniques. He has conducted condensed versions of his regular classes at local libraries and park districts. Both the classes and safaris make excellent gifts for the photography enthusiast in your family or circle of friends.
Requirements
Participation in a Photo Safari does not require prior enrollment in a class.
If you do not own a camera, you have the option to rent one for the Photo Safari.
We do suggest having a camera the day of as a cellphone just doesn’t capture the beauty around us.
You will need your own transportation or ride with a friend. Once in a while, we do rent a bus or van to do more touring of the town safaris.
Only people who have paid will get to attend the photo safaris.
Reviews from people who attended the Photo Safari
“I have attended the rail yard, Kimmswick, The Wheel in St. Louis and classic cars in Staunton safaris. My favorite was the trains because we were able to get up close and into areas not available for the general public.” -DL
“My favorite photo safari I went on was in Old St. Charles, it was a lot of fun. I've been there multiple times but being there to take pictures helped me see it in a whole new light. John being there to answer questions or guide me in the right direction was an amazing advantage. Going on photo safaris or taking classes with John helps you really love and understand photography. He brings a new level of fun with it and shows that its truly a form of art that you can enjoy and not just a job.” -Julia S
“My favorite Safari was taking pictures from the airplanes out of Bethalto airport. I have some good pictures of downtown St Louis!” -TG
“I’ve known John Locus for many years, and he has helped teach and mentor me as I have grown my photography skills. As a photographer, sometimes I feel like I get stuck in a rut or a little stuck doing the motions, but John’s photo safari was just what I needed to invest some needed energy and time to find that spark again for my passion. John’s connections and ability to set up unique locations offer me the ability to push my comfort zone and explore my creative side. I find John’s safaris to be a great investment in my own photo business and could not recommend them enough to anyone, whether they are just getting use to their camera or a seasoned pro who is looking for an opportunity to network and try something new.” -Dominic B
“I have attended photo safaris to Grafton, Feryne Cliff SP, Farm, and bus safari to Forest Park. These are great opportunities to practice your technique and learn from fellow photography enthusiasts.” -CB
“I have attended several of Johns photo safari and i’ve enjoyed all of them. One that I attended was the Train yard photo safari. John was super involved with all the people who attended. He works with you to maximize your photography skills and composition. He is big on letting the students explore the surroundings and willing to help with the students needs. John takes a lot of time planning these safaris and working with different people to make these safaris happen.” -MB
“Missouri Junk Car Graveyard, Went twice. Once in the fog in Winter and the other with icy frost. Lots of cool cars, rusty gold, great muted colors and very interesting classic junk autos. John basically acts as artist and facilitating Shaman. If you need him to help with composition tips or basic enthusiasm he is on the scene. Otherwise once you fill out your liability release, you are set free in the wild to to your thang.
John is a consummate professional with over 50 years of experience. He is great teacher and even a better artist. I recommend going on any of his photo Safari’s, he only plans tours in areas where there are always many unique things to experience and photograph.” Tom M
